How do you get to where you would like to be?

MAKE SPACE.

Three important questions that can help you accomplish your goal:

How important is it to you?

What resources can you devote to the pursuit?

What is your level of confidence that it is possible?

#1: Importance: Be real with yourself, this will set you up to be successful.  How much does reaching this goal matter to you?  What will it mean for you to accomplish it?  Where does this goal’s importance fall in relation to other obligations in your life?  Remember your answers to these questions, they will help you to MAKE SPACE where you didn’t see it before.

#2: Devoting resources: This is the act where you MAKE SPACE in your physical space, in your calendar, and yes, in your budget.  It starts with small, sustainable devotions of your resources.  Of course, it also depends on your timeline for your goals.  A faster timeline will likely require more resources, so ask how urgent your goals are?  Can you give yourself more time to reduce the stress of large demands on your resources?

Physical Space: How much room do you really need?  Honestly, not a lot.  How much space did you actually have at the last packed yoga class you went to?  Probably not much.  So where can you roll out a yoga mat with one foot of space at each end?

Calendar Space: Where can you find one or two hours a week to invest in getting you closer to your goal?  When you are getting started on a new routine, try to be as consistent as possible about where this time will come from in your schedule, it will help you establish yourself and build confidence.

Budget Space:  Is your spending aligned with the priorities of your goals?  This is often the limiting resource for many of us.  The reality is that having a roof, heat, groceries, and medications is more important than having a five day a week fitness class schedule.  Remind yourself that this isn’t all or nothing.  If this is your limiting resource can you chose to invest in training programs that focus on building self-sufficiency and supplement with occasional classes to keep diversity?

#3: Confidence: Aside from feeling like it is important you have to believe it is possible.  If you are lacking in confidence, ask yourself why.  Often the answer is that you need guidance on where to start and how to proceed.  Find a trainer who is knowledgeable in the disciplines in which you would like to train or the managing the challenges you are facing.  Find a community that is supportive, that comes together for a common purpose.

Moving Well is a worthy goal.  It is one you can achieve if you take the time to ask the right questions and you are willing to MAKE SPACE to work towards it.
